The office published the most popular names for children every year. He was surprised this year

The Czech Statistical Office always publishes a ranking of the popularity of children’s names on the occasion of the European Statistics Day, which falls on 20 October. This year, however, at the end of October, no table appeared on the Office’s website.

And even now, a month after the parents of Honzík, Eliška and Tomášek traditionally learn that their children’s names are still one of the most popular, the ranking is still not available. The TN.cz editorial staff therefore contacted the CZSO to find out if we will see this year at all.

CZSO spokesman Jan Cieslar ruled out that statistics would still be able to complete the ranking this year. According to him, the office has a lot of work to do, partly due to the coronavirus epidemic, and has therefore not been able to pay close attention to children’s names. “Don’t count on it in the coming days. The ranking could be ready in January at the earliest,” Cieslar estimates.

However, it also brings positive news. In the future, these statistics could be significantly better. So far, the CZSO has only monitored the January data and compiled a ranking from them. In the coming years, however, it could work with a different system, giving it more data.

And since this year’s name statistics won’t be, let’s remember at least the most popular baby names in previous years.

2019 year

Last year, Eliška won for the girls’ team, while Jakub was named after the boys. On the next levels of the ladder, it looked like this.

2. Anna and Jan

3. Adéla and Tomáš

4. Teresa and Matthias

5. Sofie a Adam

6. Victoria and Philip

7. Ema / Karolína and Vojtěch

8. Ema / Karolína and Lukáš

9. Natálie and Martin

10. Amálie and Matěj

2018 year

In 2018, the names Jakub and Eliška again dominated. Other positions have not changed much either.

2. Anna and Jan

3. Sofie a Adam

4. Emma and Matthias

5. Teresa and Tomas

6. Karolína and Vojtěch

7. Adéla and Matěj

8. Victoria and Philip

9. Natálie and Ondřej

10. Kristýna and Dominik

2017 year

In 2017, Eliška was also in the lead, but Jan won from the boy’s names. In other positions, the same names that you could see in the previous rankings were mostly moved, just in a slightly different order.

Parents’ preferences are thus obviously changing only very slowly, and it can be assumed that even in 2020, Adamy, Tomáška, Adélka, Anička, Viktorka and Jakuba were only crowded in maternity hospitals. We will see what 2021 brings.
