New York at curfew time

The sun is about to set. The countdown begins. The avenues of New York (United States), usually so frantic, are depopulated. On the outskirts of Times Square, the heart of New York is locked. It is not yet 8 pm that access is already prohibited. Residents try to negotiate an exception. As curfew approaches, the last passers-by leave the area. You have to go home quickly. At 8 p.m., the curfew falls. Until 5 am, it is theoretically forbidden to be outside, under penalty of being arrested.

The mayor of New York had imposed it after two nights of looting, Sunday May 31 and Monday June 1. The famous Macy’s, the largest store in the world, had been vandalized, angering the governor of the state. Wednesday evening, in a city center under high protection, calm returned. Police have cut ties, putting Manhattan Island under cover. Result: it is in the district of Brooklyn that the clashes took place. Despite the loudspeakers ordering a curfew, the protests did not stop. There were several arrests and three police officers were wounded, by gunshots and with knives. This is the first time since 1945 that New York has been under curfew.
