New York agencies prepare for possible storms – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORKNew York state agencies are preparing emergency resources due to possible severe thunderstorms that could hit our area Wednesday afternoon, Governor Andrew Cuomo said Wednesday.

Storms could bring damaging winds and difficult travel conditions.

Heavy rain and frequent lightning are also possible with these storms, Cuomo said in a statement. Temperatures will continue to rise to 90 degrees as storms move across the state.

“As heat and humidity continue to affect the entire state, we also face the threat of severe storms Wednesday that could bring heavy rain and high winds,” Governor Cuomo said. “State agencies are alert and ready to assist local partners if needed, and I encourage New Yorkers to take the time to monitor local forecasts and help ensure their loved ones are prepared, too.”

Agency preparations:

Department of Transportation

The State Department of Transportation is closely monitoring weather conditions and is prepared to respond with the following assets:

  • 1,427 large dump trucks
  • 305 large chargers
  • 77 chippers
  • 20 motor graders
  • 75 crawler and wheeled excavators
  • 22 water trucks
  • 17 vacuum trucks with sewer jets
  • 15 tree crew bucket trucks
  • 36 traffic tower platforms

The Highway Authority

Thruway Authority has 659 operators and supervisors ready to respond to any wind or flood related issue statewide with small and medium excavators, plow / dump trucks, large loaders, portable VMS boards, portable light towers, smaller generators, smaller pumps and trailer hauling equipment, as well as signaling and other traffic control devices available for detours or closures.

Statewide team numbers are as follows:

  • 244 large dump trucks
  • 117 small dump trucks
  • 67 chargers
  • 28 trailers
  • 7 trucks
  • 7 crawler excavators
  • 9 wheel excavators
  • 10 brushcutters
  • 100 chainsaws
  • 24 air trucks
  • 22 skid steers
  • 88 portable generators
  • 68 portable light units

New York State Police

The New York State Police have instructed all officers to remain vigilant and closely monitor conditions for any problems. Additional personnel will be deployed to affected areas as needed. All four-wheel drive vehicles and all specialty vehicles, including off-road utility vehicles, are in service.

Environmental Conservation Department

DEC’s environmental conservation police officers, rangers, emergency management personnel, and regional personnel are on alert and monitoring the developing situation and actively patrolling areas and infrastructure likely to be affected by severe weather. All available assets, including rapid water rescue teams, are positioned to assist with any emergency response.

Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation

The New York State Park Police and park staff are on alert and closely monitoring weather conditions and impacts.

Public Service Department

New York Public Services has approximately 5,500 workers available to participate in damage assessment, response, and restoration efforts across the state. Department of Public Services staff will monitor the work of utilities during the storm event and ensure that utilities transfer the appropriate personnel to the regions that are anticipated to be hardest hit.

New York Power Authority / Canal Corporation

The New York Power Authority and Canal Corporation staff are making arrangements for the forecast weather to ensure that all facilities, assets and equipment are safe and ready. The Power Authority stands ready to support power restoration activities if necessary.
