New Year’s Day with over 100 billion messages busiest day ever on WhatsApp | NOW

WhatsApp has set a record on December 31, the company reports Friday in a press statement. More than 100 billion messages were sent worldwide on New Year’s Day, making it the busiest day ever for the app.

Since the messaging app was launched in 2009, never more messages have been sent in one day. Of the more than 100 billion messages sent, 12 billion were photos.

Most messages were sent by users from India. That country accounted for almost a fifth of the total data traffic on WhatsApp on New Year’s Eve.

On an average day, according to the company, 42 billion messages are sent worldwide via Whatsapp. The content of those messages is encrypted, which means that even the company itself cannot see the content.

WhatsApp has more than 1.5 billion users worldwide and is therefore one of the most used apps in the world. Since 2014, the messaging app has been in the hands of Facebook, which then paid around 14 billion euros for it.
