New Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Faces Challenges in War with Russia

Latvian National Guard Major Jānis Slaidiņš told LETA agency that according to historical experience, any change of commander-in-chief brings different winds, because a new commander-in-chief must fulfill the given tasks and provide a perspective on how to solve the situation at the front.

At the moment, it is difficult to say whether and how the operation of the Ukrainian army will change, since Sirsky is practically only in his first days in office and he has to create his staff and team. It is also necessary to see who he will appoint. The first reports show that, most likely, they will be Ukrainian generals of the new generation with combat experience, starting from 2014.

“Yes, Ukraine has to solve the painful problems – logistical problems, rotation and what the technical solutions will be,” emphasized Slaidins, adding that it is unlikely that the new commander-in-chief will be able to drastically change anything in this situation without the help of the West.

Slaidins also emphasized that it is now clear that Ukraine is on strategic defense, in this way trying to stop the attack of the Russian army, however, only time will tell what Sirsky’s first decisions will be.

“The general sounds good, but wars are fought by soldiers on the ground, if resources are not prepared, then any general can come, but there will be no solution,” emphasized Slaidinš.

Pointing out that there were versions in the Western press that the President of Ukraine and Zaluzhny had disagreements over the plans to mobilize several hundred thousand additional soldiers, Slaidins agreed that without additional human resources, Ukraine will not be able to win the war and that is why it is necessary to think about how to attract and motivate soldiers.
