New tax on SUVs: the proposal that is being discussed in France

In France there is talk of a new tax, in addition to that envisaged for supercars that we already know: we are thinking of introducing a new tax that goes to tax SUVs, the high-wheeled cars that today are depopulating with great success.

All SUVs, except those with green engines that respect the environment, have one mass greater than 1,800 kg, they will probably have to pay a penalty of 10 euros for each kg over this limit. It was the Minister of Ecology Barbara Pompili who announced this new proposal, while the French government has decided that, in the next few years, new environmental measures will undoubtedly be introduced for the entire automotive sector.

A suggested idea the WWF and the Citizens Convention for Climate, a French assembly made up of 150 citizens randomly selected from the population. A council that was formed last year by the will of Emmanuel Macron and which has a very important purpose: to present new proposals to the Government, which can reduce the level of polluting emissions, for a better air quality (and life).

Regarding the recent proposal of the tax on SUV (hugely successful models on the market today), initially the council had talked about a tax to be applied on all vehicles with a mass exceeding 1,400 kg, then the threshold rose to 1,800 kg. According to the Government in fact in this way at least the most widespread and popular models are excluded from the application of the tax.

In addition to the compact and popular models, virtually all those with the French brand were also excluded. The only risk would be Renault Koleos (recently renovated), in the 190 HP Blue dCi 4 × 4 version, with 1,845 kg of weight (it would pay a tax of 450 euros). As for Opel (controlled by the PSA Group) no car would fall under the malus, for Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi instead the only SUV taxed would be X-Trail dCi 150 4WD.

Nothing official is yet known about the tax, it remains only and exclusively a proposal that the Government has already discussed. If the decision were to be made to apply this new tax to SUVs with mass over 1,800 kg, then it could already come into effect in 2021, with the forthcoming French Budget Law. In addition to the weight limit, it will be evaluated whether to take into account the type of bodywork of the cars involved.
