New Research Reveals Surprising Details about Beethoven’s Health and Family History

Jakarta

DNA from the German composer’s hair Ludwig van Beethoven culminated in surprising results. Researcher wants to find out the health problems of Beethoven, who lost his hearing completely at the age of 40.

“Our main goal is to shed light on Beethoven’s health problems, which famously included progressive hearing loss, beginning in his mid-to-late 20s and ultimately causing him to become functionally deaf in 1818,” biochemist Johannes Krause of the Max Planck Institute for Anthropology said. Evolutionary in Germany explained in a press statement in 2023.

The main cause of hearing loss was never known, even by his personal doctor, Dr Johann Adam Schmidt. However, it is known that Beethoven had a tinnitus problem in his 20s which slowly turned into reduced tolerance for loud sounds.

Since the age of 22, Beethoven often experienced severe stomach aches and even diarrhea. Six years before his death, he was diagnosed with liver disease.

In March 1827, Ludwig van Beethoven died after a long illness. He’s been bedridden since Christmas. His limbs and stomach were swollen. Apart from that, his breathing was also short.

Finally, it was discovered that Beethoven had contracted hepatitis B during this time. His condition was worsened by his drinking habits and various risk factors for liver disease.

Unfortunately, this research cannot reveal what caused the maestro’s hearing loss.

“We couldn’t find a definite cause for Beethoven’s deafness or digestive problems,” Krause said.

Furthermore, the researchers conducted an investigation that compared the Y chromosome in the hair samples with that of modern relatives descended from Beethoven’s father’s line. The results show a mismatch. This shows that there was sexual activity outside of marriage in the generations leading up to the composer’s birth.

“This finding indicates the existence of an extrapair paternity event in the paternal line between the conception of Hendrik van Beethoven in Kampenhout, Belgium in 1572 and the conception of Ludwig van Beethoven seven generations later in 1770, in Bonn, Germany,” said Tristan Begg, a biological anthropologist from Cambridge University.
