The main medical officer of the Department of Health, Dr. Iris Cardona, confirmed this Friday that cases of the new subvariant of COVID-19, called Pirola.
“There is a variant of COVID that is being monitored as has happened on other occasions. It is becoming the most widely circulated and is highly contagious. But, as far as we know, it is not necessarily more lethal, it is causing more mortality.”indicated Cardona in an interview with WKAQ 580 AM.
The doctor stated that people who have the new version of the vaccine would be protected from this variant.
“The invitation is still to get vaccinated”he added.
BA.2.86, a newly designed version of Omicron, has more than 30 mutations in its spike protein, a higher number than previously detected Omicron subvariants, according to Yale Medicine. Although cases have appeared in the US and five other countries, they do not appear to be related, which is of particular concern to health authorities.
In a risk assessment dated August 23, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said there was no evidence that the variant was causing more severe illness, but noted that this could change over time.
