“My family has always built,” says Beate Schnitter, “on both the Guyer and Schnitter sides.” This statement is made in “The fourth dimension”, a 23-minute documentary film about the life and work of the Küsnacht architect, which will be shown as a Swiss premiere on Friday, April 9, at the Zurich Architecture Film Festival.
Impending demolition
The film was shot by Lydia Trüb, Vice President of the Zurich Homeland Security, and Heidi Bader, owner of the Zolliker film production company Calinba Film. “I didn’t even intend to make this film,” says Trüb. Because of the impending demolition of the Villa Gelpke-Engelhorn, she took a closer look at the work of Beate Schnitter. When the historian and German studies scholar realized that Schnitter had hardly any documents left about her work, she was alarmed and contacted the architect. Born in 1929, Schnitter agreed to talk to them. The basis for the film was laid.
