The new guidelines are part of a five-year plan to promote diversity on and behind the big screen. It contains percentages and numbers for hiring people with a non-white house color, women, the disabled and LGBT people. This does not only concern acting roles, but also functions such as production employee, marketing employee and intern. “We believe these inclusion standards will accelerate long-term, vital change in our industry,” the Academy’s top two executives said in a statement.
The new rules are not yet in effect at the upcoming Oscar ceremony, but films that want to compete for the prestigious awards from 2024 must meet at least two of the four conditions. The four standards are respectively about casting and subject, behind-the-scenes personnel, internship and training opportunities, and marketing and publicity.
Twitter discussion
In 2016, dissatisfaction with the lack of diversity at the Oscars culminated in a Twitter discussion under the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite. That happened after two years in a row only white participants had won prizes. Since the massive demonstrations against institutionalized racism this summer, Hollywood has also been increasingly under the magnifying glass.
