New controller PlayStation 5: This is how the adaptive triggers work

From PlayStation 5 has a controller with haptic feedback and adaptive triggers. These are technical terms for more realistic vibrations and shoulder buttons that can provide counter pressure. For example, if a gun gets stuck in a game, the shoulder button can no longer be pressed, or the button becomes heavier when drawing a bow.

How that works exactly, is clear in a video of TronicsFix. The triggers of the PS5 controller are connected to a motor via a gear and a spiral. If the motor is not energizing, the trigger feels like a regular trigger. But if the motor gives back pressure, the triggers provide tension and back pressure.


Larger battery and motors

In addition to the new motors for the triggers, the DualSense, like its DualShock predecessors, also has motors in the handles. This time they are not simple vibration motors, but motors that provide haptic feedback. Not only violent jerking movements, but also subtle taps such as footsteps can be simulated.

The DualSense’s battery is 50 percent larger than its predecessor: 1560 mAh versus 1000 mAh. Presumably that extra capacity is needed for the larger engines. The battery life of the DualSense 5 has yet to be proven by practical tests.


Possibly the same sticks

The analogue controller sticks of the DualSense seem unchanged from the DualShock 4 according to TronicsFix. That would mean that the DualSense could also suffer from the so-called drift problem. Then the stick deviates slightly, and characters sometimes walk in one direction without the stick being touched. However, that too will have to be demonstrated in practice.

From PlayStation 5 will be available in the Netherlands from November 19. The DualSense controller will appear from November 12, and costs 70 euros separately.
