The Bell and Telus companies have reportedly approached Ottawa for compensation to remove Huawei equipment if they were to be banned in the country, the report said. National Post.
For three years, the Liberal government has been considering whether or not to ban Chinese telecommunications equipment from 5G networks in Canada for security reasons.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Innovation François-Philippe Champagne have indicated that they will announce their final position in a few weeks, particularly with regard to compensation for telecommunications companies that had already installed this equipment.
Government uncertainty in this matter had prompted Canadian wireless service providers to build their 5G networks using equipment from other providers. However, Bell and Telus had installed Huawei equipment to serve their existing 4G networks and those of previous generations.
The cost of removing this technology has not been officially established. Early estimates suggest that Telus may have to shell out $ 1 billion, according to the National Post.
According to experts, Canada will have to opt for the ban, as allies of the Five Eyes intelligence network, i.e. the United States, Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom , have all banned or restricted Huawei equipment.
Huawei’s ties to Beijing would be risky for security, especially given laws that force Chinese companies to cooperate with its intelligence services.
