Covid-19 is spreading rapidly among the younger strata in the north of the country. The growth rate of new cases is 32% among children under ten and 24% among adolescents – data that came out of the Infarmed meeting, this Thursday, cited by the Jornal de Notícias (JN).
According to Óscar Felgueiras, professor at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Porto (FCUP) and one of the experts heard at the meeting, the incidence in the North “is almost seven times higher than that recorded in April at the height of the pandemic”. In the district of Porto, despite the stabilization among the active population, the increase is noticeable among children and adolescents.
To JN, Óscar Felgueiras said that “the origin of transmission among young people is not clear”. The school principals insist that schools are safe, although they say that “they cannot control students when they leave school, use transport and play sports in clubs”.
The Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, Manuel Heitor, also defended that the classes should continue to be in person, after the possibility of closing schools and universities was raised, in the new state of emergency.
At the Infarmed meeting, more than 80% of the new cases from the last week were also found to have no source identified. It is expected that the pandemic peak arrive in a week, with more than seven thousand infections daily.
