New Cases Overtake India, Indonesia Called the Epicenter of Covid Asia

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Case Covid-19 of Indonesia again broke the record high with an additional daily positive of 54,517 people on Wednesday (14/7).

Indonesia continues to record an increase in Covid-19 infections to set a record high case for several days in a row.

Indonesia is said to have become the new epicenter of Covid-19 in Asia.

Associated Press in an article entitled “Indonesia reports 54,000 virus cases, becomes Asian hotspot” reports Indonesia’s daily infections surpassing India, where the transmission is starting to subside.

On Wednesday, India’s daily cases were well below Indonesia’s with 41,854 people

The US news agency wrote that officials were concerned that the more contagious Delta variant was now spreading from the islands of Java and Bali.

“I predict the outbreak will continue to increase in July because we have not been able to prevent the spread of infection,” said epidemiologist Pandu Riono at the University of Indonesia, Wednesday.

“Emergency social distancing is still not sufficient. It has to be twice as strict as we are facing the Delta variant, which is twice as contagious.”

What’s more worrying, as revealed Nikke Asia, of Indonesia’s 270 million population, which is only one fifth of India’s, Indonesia has now recorded around 132 cases per one million people. While India is only 26.

The figures do not take into account Indonesia’s poor testing and tracing record.

Indonesia’s case positivity rate, referring to the percentage of confirmed infections and people tested, has hovered around 30 percent over the past week, while India’s is 2 percent.

Cumulatively, India’s confirmed coronavirus tally is still the highest in Asia with 30.9 million cases and 412,019 as of Thursday (15/7), followed by Indonesia with 2,670,046 cases and 69,210 deaths.

But India’s number of coronavirus cases has continued to fall after peaking in May. While the worst outbreak in Indonesia since the start of the pandemic has not shown any signs of slowing down.
