Netherlands plan to start league with ghost games on June 19

League operations in Dutch professional football are scheduled to continue without spectators on June 19.

Local media reported on this decision after an association meeting with all clubs in the two top division on Tuesday. The hope is that training will resume in mid-May – provided the government approves it.

Because of the measures to prevent the spread of the corona virus, the games are initially all to be played as ghost games. The Netherlands is now severely affected by the pandemic. To date, more than 2,000 people have died there with or from Covid 19 disease.

There are a similar number in neighboring Belgium. There, the game was stopped last week – as the first professional football league in Europe. Table Club Bruges has been declared a champion. The move brought Belgium a reprimand from the European Football Union (UEFA) – along with the threat of losing European Cup starting places for the coming season.
