Packages containing a total of 980 kilos of cocaine were found near the sea wall near the Zeeland village of Rilland. The drugs have a street value of more than 73 million euros, the Public Prosecution Service reports.
The drugs were found last day, after a “suspicious situation” on the night from Saturday to Sunday on the Western Scheldt. That night it was reported that a boat was sailing “dangerously close” to a seagoing vessel. Customs saw the boat sailing, but lost sight of it.
Last day, the water police found an abandoned boat on the mudflats at the Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe nature reserve, in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen. The coast guard used an airplane to search for possible drowning victims, but none were found.
The drugs were later found on the other side of the Western Scheldt. The cocaine has now been destroyed.
