The pandemic of the new coronavirus has killed at least 343,211 people worldwide since its appearance in December in China, according to an assessment established by the AFP from official sources this Sunday at 9:00 p.m.
More than 5,362,160 cases of infection have been officially diagnosed in 196 countries and territories since the start of the epidemic. This number of diagnosed cases, however, only reflects a fraction of the actual number of infections, with a large number of countries only testing cases requiring hospital care. Among these cases, at least 2,079,300 are today considered to be cured.
Since the count carried out the day before at 9 p.m., 3,441 new deaths and 99,827 new cases have been recorded worldwide. The countries with the most new deaths are Brazil with 965 new deaths, the United States (951) and Mexico (190).
The United States, who recorded their first coronavirus-related death in early February, are the country most affected in terms of number of deaths and cases, with 97,430 deaths for 1,633,076 cases. At least 361,239 people were declared cured.
After the United States, the most affected countries are United Kingdom with 36,793 deaths for 259,559 cases, theItaly with 32,785 deaths (229,858 cases), theSpain with 28,752 deaths (235,772 cases) and the France with 28,367 deaths (182,584 cases).
Belgium most affected country?
Among the hardest hit countries, Belgium is the one who deplores the greatest number of deaths compared to its population, with 80 deaths per 100,000 population, followed by Spain (61), Italy (54), the United Kingdom (54), and France (43).
China (excluding the territories of Hong Kong and Macao), where the epidemic began in late December, officially counted a total of 82,974 cases (3 new between Saturday and Sunday), including 4,634 deaths and 78,261 recoveries.
Relatively spared Africa
Europe totaled Sunday at 9 p.m. 173,915 deaths for 2,021,900 cases, the United States and Canada 103,889 deaths (1,717,158 cases), Latin America and the Caribbean 39,166 deaths (720,260 cases), Asia 13,992 deaths (441,447 cases), the Middle East 8,805 deaths (343,372 cases), Africa 3,314 deaths (109,562 cases), and Oceania 130 deaths (8,466 cases).

This assessment was carried out using data collected by AFP offices from the competent national authorities and information from the World Health Organization (WHO). Due to corrections by the authorities or late publication of data, the 24h increase figures may not correspond exactly to those published the day before.
