National Agency for Public Health Issues Warning about Suspected Cases of Bird Flu: Precautions and Symptoms

The National Agency for Public Health advises the population to avoid contact with wild birds, with poultry that appear sick or dead, with surfaces that appear to be contaminated with feces from wild or domestic birds. The recommendation comes in the context of new suspected cases of bird flu in the country, reports IPN.

People are advised to wash their hands as often as possible with soap and water, especially after contact with birds, or use alcohol for disinfection. Children should be supervised and prohibited from playing with dead or sick birds.

Poultry meat and eggs must be thermally processed for a long time. Influenza viruses are destroyed by heat processing at more than 70°C. Avoiding contact between wild birds and poultry is recommended.

Cases of avian influenza in birds were confirmed near the reservoir in Cubolta commune, Sângerei district.

The ANSP states that the risk of spreading this strain to humans remains low, with almost all cases of A(H5N1) infection being associated with close contact with live or dead infected birds or with environments contaminated with the A(H5N1) virus. There is no evidence that the disease can be transmitted to humans through properly prepared food.

Symptoms of A(H5N1) virus infection may include: fever (often high fever > 38°C) and malaise, cough, sore throat and muscle pain. Other symptoms are: abdominal pain, chest pain and diarrhea. A(H5N1) infection in humans can cause serious illness and has a high mortality rate.

In the past four years, globally there have been 19 cases of bird flu in humans and five deaths, in Laos, India, China, Ecuador, Spain, USA, Vietnam, Cambodia, Chile and the UK.
