HERTOGENBOSCH – Belgian cyclist Nathan Van Hooydonck has to end his career at the age of 27 due to a heart anomaly. His difficulties came after he became ill while driving a week ago.
The cyclist caused a traffic accident and ended up unconscious. He received a pacemaker in the hospital and his team Jumbo-Visma announced today that Van Hooydonck will not return to the peloton.
“I realize that I was incredibly lucky. It could have turned out differently if I hadn’t received good help so quickly. I’m fine now, but I have to accept that this means the end of my professional career.” Van Hooydonck said in a statement.
During the accident in the village of Kalmthout near Antwerp, his pregnant wife was also sitting in the car next to Van Hooydonck, but she escaped unhurt.
“Everything is fine with Alicia and the pregnancy and we are looking forward to the birth. This is really helping me now.” added the cyclist, who was one of Jonas Vingegaard’s assistants in his successful title defense at this year’s Tour de France.
