The camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, also known as the High Resolution Imaging Experiment (HiRISE), recently captured a mysterious appearance similar to a ‘bear face’ on the planet Mars, friend.
The appearance of the ‘bear face’ on the planet Mars was published on NASA’s official website on Thursday (5/10/2023). According to several sources, in December 2022, the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is documenting the structure of craters and rocks on the ‘red planet’.
“The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) captured a piece of ursine pareidolia (a bear-like appearance, red) this is December 12, 2022,” wrote NASA’s statement.
Even though it resembles the shape of a bear’s face, the image is actually a hill on Mars which has a quite strange shape, friend.
So, what is ursine pareidolia?
If you look at several explanations from researchers, pareidolia is an optical illusion phenomenon in the form of recognizing images or patterns that do not actually exist. Regarding the explanation of why it has the shape of a bear’s face, NASA explained that this is the surface structure of Mars which is collapsing and forming the letter “V” (like a bear’s nose).
Meanwhile, the other two craters form an eye shape and the circular fault pattern around the crater and other Martian structures circle to form a bear’s head. This occurs because the circular fracture pattern is caused by the deposition of sediment over a buried impact crater.
For your information, MRO itself was launched to Mars by NASA on August 12 2015 to capture phenomena that occur on the ‘red planet’. Since launch, MRO has studied the history of water on Mars and observed small-scale features on the planet’s surface.
Researchers have so far not found the remains of organisms and liquid water on Mars. The last time, records were obtained that NASA’s Perseverance rover found organic material in the Jazero Crater area in July 2023.
However, this organic material likely comes from “biotics” or the result of life on other planets that fell onto the planet Mars. There have also been found formation of other pathways, such as interactions between water and dust originating from meteors.
