NASA Wants to Use Drones to Monitor Active Volcanoes

Drone it can fly even when it is beyond the pilot’s visual range, using an autonomous system in combination with a predetermined flight plan, to reach the top of the volcano.

From there, drone collects visual and thermal information about volcanic activity.

Black Swift Technologies CEO Jack Elston said: “The aim of this mission is to continue to drive the capability of drones to provide valuable insight into natural phenomena.

“This deployment showcases some of the most advanced automation technologies that we think will go a long way in simplifying today’s extremely difficult drone operations. One of the most exciting results is seeing our custom autopilot system determine when conditions look very dangerous and the drone reverses course,” said Elston.
