NASA spacecraft shows what an avalanche looks like on Mars

Although the avalanche on Mars occurred in 2019, NASA showed the video in high quality this week, zooming in on the image.

The Mars Recoinnaissance Orbiter, an orbiter that has been on Mars since 2006, captured some images of how an avalanche happens on the red planet.

Although the event happened on May 29, 2019, NASA is just showing it this week. It does it in high resolution and with zoom.

The North American agency stressed that the images are exceptionally remarkable. In them are revealed facts of a planet still unknown in its fullness.

One of the oldest NASA spacecraft found on Mars

The MRO is one of the oldest spacecraft NASA has on Mars. Was released on August 12, 2005 and arrived on the planet on March 10, 2006.

Their goal is to look for evidence that the water remained on the surface of Mars for a long period.

The avalanche, according to NASA, occurred 500 meters high at the planet’s north pole, in the spring. As the temperature rose and the ice melted, the blocks broke, causing the avalanche.

As the Martian surface is quite dusty, it is shown that a large amount of dust was kicked up by the falling ice.

Currently, NASA has the Perseverance Rover on its way to Mars, which carries a small helicopter called Ingenuity. The goal is to explore the planet’s surface and assess whether the helicopter can fly.
