NASA Finds 2,241 Habitable Planet Candidates, Can It Replace Earth?

MASSACUSETTS – Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) planet hunter spacecraft NASA has made observations of thousands of objects in outer space for two years. In his observations, TESS found there were 2,241 new extrasolar planet candidates that could be habitable.

Since its launch in April 2018, TESS has alerted NASA scientists to a number of identified habitable planet candidates. “It’s very interesting because TESS is like showing a map of an exoplanet with thousands of objects that can be observed,” said Natalia Guerrero, a researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and lead author of the paper, at NASA. During the two years of launch, the TESS observations actually provided more than 16,000 targets for research. Of the tens of thousands of targets, scientists NASA discovered 2,241 potentially habitable planets.

Researchers are also running preliminary tests to evaluate these planet candidates. It is known that more than 500 other phenomena are disguised as foreign worlds. Because sometimes the phenomena in outer space have characteristics produced by spacecraft activity.

“This is the result of extraordinary work – a rich stack of exoplanet candidates for the community to mine and explore for years to come,” said Jessie Christiansen, a research scientist at the Exoplanet Science Institute. NASA.

Of all the possible new planets, the one that stands out the most is TOI 700 d. It is the first planet TESS has identified that may be about the size of Earth and orbits in the habitable zone of its star.

Another interesting discovery is a planet named LHS 3844 b. The planet is nearly six times the size of Earth and may only be 45 million years old. LHS 3844 b made its full stellar circuit in just 11 hours, although it may just be empty rock.

To find a truly habitable planet, NASAextend the TESS mission for another two years through September 2022.
