Mysterious woman ‘with pepper spray’ wanted in Maddie McCann case Abroad

For years, the McCann case has been a headache for police forces in Portugal, the United Kingdom and more recently in Germany. Christian Brueckner, who is currently already detained in Germany, is also suspected of the disappearance of Maddie. Using mobile data, Portuguese police say he was close to the apartment in Praia da Luz from which Maddie disappeared on May 3, 2007. His cell phone was on in that village between 7:30 and 8 p.m., and according to the parents, Maddie disappeared between 9 and 10 p.m. while they were out for dinner.

But Christian Brueckner says he was driving east to Faro at 10 a.m. with the woman he allegedly had sex with before. During their ride they are said to have been stopped and photographed by the police. The woman is said to have even been arrested for carrying pepper spray, which is illegal in Portugal. Christian Brueckner would argue that the Portuguese police should still have those photos, according to British media, the German police did manage to rake up a photo of a woman in Brueckner’s camper.

German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters, who is leading the investigation into Madeleine along with Portuguese and British detectives, told Sky News: “I assume that if he has something to exonerate him, sooner or later he will share it with us. and then we’ll investigate. We’ll see what happens after that. So far he hasn’t told us anything, he hasn’t given us a rock-solid alibi. So, we can work purely with the evidence we’ve found so far in our research. And there was nothing to exonerate him.”

No breakthrough expected yet

Despite the fact that Brueckner has been in the crosshairs of the police for several years, he was only interrogated by the German police for the first time a few weeks ago, at the insistence of the Portuguese. But during that interrogation, he refused to say a word about Maddie McCann’s disappearance. The German police do not expect a breakthrough in the McCann case in the near future, despite previous statements by McCann’s parents, experts and former cellmates of Brueckner. According to British media, he will be officially charged this summer. Meanwhile, Christian Brueckner is also suspected by the German police in several sex offenses, including the rape of an Irish woman in 2004.
