Music Notebook: Banda MS en Baja Beach Fest, James Brandon Lewis en Soda Bar, Tones and I en SOMA

Band MS at Baja Beach Fest

Puerto Rican reggaeton music superstar Daddy Yankee’s performance on his farewell tour may be the biggest moment for many of the fans attending the 2022 edition of Baja Beach Fest in Playas de Rosarito.

But the vocalist Slowly It won’t be the biggest act of the two-weekend festival, which runs from August 12-14 and 19-21.

That honor falls to Banda MS, whose lineup of 17 musicians will make it the biggest act—literally—performing the fourth edition of this locally sourced reggaeton and Latin-trap music marathon.

Banda MS, short for Banda Sinaloense MS by Sergio Lizárraga, made a surprise appearance at the 2021 edition of Baja Beach Fest. The cheeky group joined singer Becky G cq there to make what a cursetheir 2020 joint hit with Snoop Dogg, and the audience roared in approval.

Winners of 12 Billboard Latin Music Awards, Banda MS performed this year 2022 on the main stage of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. They are the second regional Mexican music group to do so in Coachella’s 23-year history.

His return on August 13 and 20 to the Baja Beach Fest, where Banda MS is the only regional Mexican music group signed, should be very exciting.

From August 12 to 14 and from 19 to 21 in Playa Rosarito; performance times have yet to be released; the festival takes place literally on the beach, so there is no specific address $179 (single day tickets), $369 (3 day passes). bajabeachfest.com.

James Brandon Lewis Trio, con 10-19 & The Number Men

How many acclaimed New York jazz trios have played at the indie-rock filled San Diego Soda Bar since it opened in 2009?

I can hardly think of any, which makes the performance on Tuesday, August 9 at the Soda Bar by the fiercely talented saxophonist James Brandon Lewis and his band all the more unusual and exciting.

Lewis, 39, has one foot firmly planted in the jazz sax tradition of John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins, and the other boldly pointing to the future. His big, muscular sound is matched by his harmonic prowess and sophistication.

Lewis’s most recent album, Jesup Wagonwas one of the most rewarding of the past year in any genre.

One suspects his Soda Bar engagement may be due to the fact that last month he signed a new recording deal with Anti, the avant-garde record label that has previously released albums from everyone from Kate Bush and Mavis Staples to the Kronos. Quartet and former San Diego Tom Waits.

Additionally, Lewis has released his first single for Anti, Fear Notbacking The Messthetics, which features two former members of Fugazi, the celebrated Washington DC post-punk band

Tones and I

Tones and I’s debut tour delayed by COVID in the US, is it a belated victory or a farewell?

Did the career of this 28-year-old Australian singer, songwriter and producer – real name: Toni Watson – reach its climax three years ago?

Perhaps, to answer the first question, and absolutely, to answer the second.

Watson’s second single, Dance Monkey As of 2019, it topped the charts in 30 countries, from Belgium to Slovenia to Canada.

A catchy, bouncy electro-pop confection, it was so popular that Watson – a former street performer – became the first female artist to reach over 2 billion streams on Spotify.

Unfortunately, their debut album, Welcome to the Madhousefrom last year, is so bland and inoffensive that it’s offensive for those very reasons.

Can Watson’s concerts with his touring band transcend his monotonous album?

We will know soon.
