Murder of ‘the Indian’ from Leiden remains unsolved

New investigation into the murder of Hans Schonewille from Leiden, also known as ‘the Indian’, has not led to a solution. The Public Prosecution Service announced today that the case from 1999 remains open as a cold case and will only be arrested again as soon as there is new information, reports Broadcasting West.

Schonewille, a well-known figure in the hospitality industry in Leiden, was found on 11 June 1999 in a remote place in Aarlanderveen, about 15 kilometers outside of Leiden. He had been shot and his car was found burning in Leiderdorp. The murder investigation did not result in a trial at the time.

Podcast series

A police cold case team drew attention to the case again in March 2021 in the form of a six-part podcast series in association with Investigation Requested† The Public Prosecution Service offered 30,000 euros in tip money for information that would lead to solving the case.

Meanwhile, the police cold case team has again conducted extensive tactical and forensic investigations. Witnesses, those involved and possible suspects have been heard, but that did not lead to prosecution† Flyers were also distributed, tips were researched and inquiries were made in the nightlife world. In addition, dozens of forensic traces have been sent to the NFI, the Public Prosecution Service says.
