The woman of the person shot on Wednesday evening in Sofia, Martin Bojanov-Notary, is an employee of the GDBOP. This was confirmed by the Chief Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Zhivko Kotsev. She was fired once, but was later reinstated by the court. She is currently on maternity leave, explained Kotsev.
She started work in May 2021. Just a few months later, on August 2, the then head of the GDBOP and current minister Kalin Stoyanov suggested to Boyko Rashkov that the young woman be released, as she was not granted access to classified information. It is unclear why she was denied access to state secrets. By law, the services investigate each applicant and, if they decide there is a risk, deny admission. After two court decisions, she was returned as an intern at the Ministry of the Interior.
Bojanov was shot in front of a hotel complex in the capital’s Gorna Banya district. According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, two or three shots were fired. Additional inspections are pending to collect more evidence and to specify what the weapon was, explained Kotsev.
According to eyewitnesses, Bojanov was with his wife at the time of the shooting. A security guard from the complex told BTV that he was with her and his two children.
“He was with the mother and two children. There were no other people. The mother I saw is the mother of the two children. She is the wife of the deceased. The woman was next to the car with one of the children in her hand. She was scared and crying“, the eyewitness said.
The murder was reported shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday. According to initial data of the investigators, the bullets that killed Bojanov hit his body and probably his head. Throughout the night, police teams were inspecting the site. So far, no one has been arrested for the serious crime.
Valuable witnesses
For now, the Ministry of the Interior does not comment on the versions that are being worked on.
“It is frivolous to raise versions, not even 24 hours have passed since this heinous crime was committed“, said the Secretary General.
He also commented that the initial inspection was completed on Thursday morning, additional ones are to come. According to him, evidence and “valuable witnesses” were found. It is still not clear where exactly the shots were fired, as well as the direction of retreat of the shooter.
An example of a dysfunctional judicial system
The murdered Bojanov was considered very influential in the judicial system. He was reported to have threatened magistrates, but was never investigated or charged.
“He wasn’t investigated, he was investigated by journalists, so this is again an example of a broken justice system in a broad sense, and that’s one of the reasons we want it to be fixed“, Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov commented from Brussels.
When asked whether the position of the murdered man’s wife in the GDBOP made him untouchable for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Kotsev said that this leadership has shown that it does not tolerate such things.
Martin Bojanov is known for a case stolen in 2004 from the Supreme Court of Cassation against Slavi Krasevski – a notary with revoked rights and dozens of criminal proceedings. The case disappears from the courtroom during the lunch break, along with original documents related to it. For the theft, pre-trial proceedings were conducted against a person named “Martin Bojanov” and his relative named “Boiko Bojanov”, but there is no information about the outcome of the case.
Martin Bojanov is one of the heroes in an investigation by the “Anti-Corruption Fund” (AKF) organization from 2021. It tells the story of the arrest of businessman Veselin Denkov, who was detained in a case of the now closed specialized prosecutor’s office.
Denkov spent several months in detention. The ACF investigation showed how his wife – the former “Miss Bulgaria” Ivayla Bakalova, led talks about the release with the main emphasis on how much money had to be paid to get out of custody. One of her interlocutors was former MP Yane Yanev. The other is Bojanov. He claimed to consult many people on various matters.
Martin Bojanov says then in front of the ACF camera: “From how to arrange their garden or their home to which, possibly, lawyer to turn to, etc.“.
The prosecutor’s office did not take any action after the ACF investigation. It was never verified whether those caught on hidden camera were involved in a network to influence the justice system.
Not a notary, not a lawyer
The murdered Martin Bojanov was not a notary or a lawyer. His nickname “The Notary” because of the services he performed, explained Boyko Stankushev from ACF to Nova TV.
“I have known this person since 15 years ago, when we had several cases of real estate fraud in the district administration where I worked. We have taken him in for questioning. He is neither a notary nor a lawyer. He is another intermediary between the dark side of our society and the magistrates. He is influential, as he knows well to whom and how much money should be given to do dirty work“, commented Milen Ivanov, former vice-rector of the Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to bTV.
According to criminalist Ivan Savov, the attempt was premeditated.
“The killing was carried out in cold blood in front of the victim’s relatives, meaning the perpetrator was not worried about being seenIvan Savov said.
He explained that the killing was with a small-caliber pistol, which is used in similar crimes, because the bullet deforms when it enters the victim’s body, making ballistics examination difficult. According to Savov, the found casing is good news, but it does not mean 100% that the weapon will be found, because it may not be registered.
“Money is given in every system. Whether it is the Ministry of the Interior, magistrates, a real notary or a bailiff. The face is played enough and has a tradition in its activity. It is known in underground environments. This makes it difficult to search for the guarantor and the specific motive. Such people have hundreds of manifestations.
