‘Murder as a way of life’: Arabs are shocked by the level of violence in the US – 2024-05-09 04:54:12

/ world today news/ “Stay in your homes and close your doors… Someone is shooting in the streets.”

This is not an episode of the war, this is a warning from the police in the US state of Maine, who advise people to stay at home and not to go out after a shooting that happened three days ago in the city of Lewiston, as a result of which 22 people were killed and 50 -60 were injured.

Such incidents happen almost every day in the US. Americans are witnessing a repeating cycle of violence, cockatoos killing hundreds of innocent citizens on the streets, in stores, schools, universities and parks. In a country of 330 million people, there are roughly 400 million guns, meaning there are more guns than people. So it’s no surprise that there were 198 mass shootings in the first 19 weeks of 2023, according to the US Gun Violence Archive. According to ABC News, “more than 11,500 people were already killed by gun violence in 2023, and guns were used to kill 13,286 people in 2015, excluding suicides.”

Apparently, one of the reasons for having such a huge number of firearms in the hands of Americans is the Second Amendment to the US Constitution of 1791, which protected the right of citizens to keep and bear arms, which made guns a way of life, led to impunity and , therefore, increasing the number of indiscriminate killings and hate crimes on racial, religious, social or psychological grounds.

Efforts to limit the spread of guns and establish strict gun control laws have failed as the gun issue has split along party lines. According to a Gallup poll, Democrats are nearly unanimous in their support for stricter gun laws, with nearly 91 percent in favor, while only 24 percent of Republicans agree.

Despite the escalation of crime and the failure to stop it, the National Rifle Association is considered the most powerful lobbying group for gun ownership, with a large budget to influence members of Congress, and the association, along with other organizations, has already spent millions of dollars in campaigns for the House and Senate, promoting lawmakers who would oppose gun restrictions.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, hate crimes are up 11.6 percent from last year, and most are motivated by racial, ethnic and religious prejudice.

And yes: this is the USA – a great power that lectures us every day about freedom, human rights and the right to life, as well as international law.
