The National Association of Veterinarians of Municipalities (Anvetem) defends the euthanasia of animals in official collection centers (CROA) when they are not adopted after 12 or 18 months, advances the ‘JN’ in this Thursday’s edition.
The decision must rest with the municipal veterinarians, stresses the Association, and may be the solution to fight the overcrowding of kennels and legal shelters that leads to the consequent increase in the number of animals in illegal shelters, without conditions of accommodation and dignity.
“The country is not prepared to receive so many stray animals”, says Ricardo Lobo, from Anvetem’s management, which defends models like the one in Holland.
“Leaving a dog in a box for life is cruel and CROA’s are not able to welcome the animals that exist on the streets. In Holland, considered an example of good practice, dogs are slaughtered when they have been in the center for more than 12 months, that is, when there is no possibility of adoption, ”says the official to the same newspaper.
