Municipal 2020: go for the first round

Vote early, advises the High Commission

Let’s go ! Bad weather and the announcement of triggering of the number one cyclone alert in the North province should not prevent voters from being able to fulfill their electoral duty this Sunday. The 291 polling stations were ready for the opening of the poll at 8 a.m. this morning. The High Commission, however, asked voters to follow the development of the Gretel tropical depression and recommended that they vote early in the day.

The ballot in figures

A total of 212,884 electors are summoned to the 33 municipalities. They will have to decide between 134 candidates in the running, 121 lists for municipalities with more than a thousand inhabitants and 13 for those with less than a thousand inhabitants.
To vote, voters must present themselves with an official identity document (even expired) and their general electoral card even if it is not compulsory.
In the 2014 municipal elections, there were 175,514 voters and 149 candidate lists. The stake was 66.96%.

One or two rounds

Four municipalities vote only this Sunday, municipalities of less than a thousand inhabitants where the ballot takes place only in one round in New Caledonia. These are Belep, Farino, Moindou and Sarraméa.
In municipalities with more than a thousand inhabitants, there will also be only one round in certain municipalities since only two lists are running for votes. This is the case in Ponérihouen, Pouembout and Touho.
For the other municipalities, a second round is planned for next Sunday, March 22, if no list wins an absolute majority this Sunday.
