A crash occurred at Munich Central Station: A regional express braked too late and collided with a buffer stop. The federal police are investigating the train driver.

Munich – A regional express train entering Munich’s main train station collided with a buffer stop yesterday, Thursday evening, March 11th. According to the Federal Police, the train driver braked too late.

The officials report that the train arriving from the Augsburg district arrived shortly before 7 p.m. on platform 14 at Munich Central Station. “Despite the emergency braking being initiated, the train’s locomotive hit the buffer stop at the end of the track, touched it and moved it slightly,” the police officers wrote in a press release.

After initial investigations by the federal police, which are investigating dangerous interference in rail traffic, the 57-year-old locomotive driver underestimated the speed of his train and the remaining route. “After he had initiated the braking obviously belatedly, the subsequent rapid braking no longer helped to prevent the collision with the buffer stop, which was also set up for the purpose of braking.”

An inspection of the train with the number RB86 showed that none of the passengers was injured. Even the train driver got away with the horror. According to the report, the amount of damage is the subject of the investigation, “but should be low according to an apparent assessment of the external recognizability”.

However, the train driver was not allowed to continue driving, at least for the first moment: “After the locomotive and the passenger cars had been detached from the buffer stop by a replacement driver and driven out several meters, several sprains on the track structure in the buffer stop area were found in the track area.” However, track 14 was still functional. According to officials, there was no other impact on rail operations.
