NEW YORK — An MTA fare hike is fast approaching.

The metro fare increases come at a record ridership time. In April, the transit agency saw its first day of 4 million ridership since the pandemic.

On Monday, top transit officials unveiled new single-ride fare proposals at a meeting of the MTA’s finance committee. The proposed price increase is increasing rates from $2.75 to $2.90. Monthly fees would go up from $127 to $132.

The price increase is a step toward the $3 fares that subway riders could see by 2025.

The MTA calls the increase a “reasonable” walk. It’s also the first increase in nearly four years and moves the MTA back toward a biennial fare increase schedule.

Commuter trains will also experience a slight upturn of approximately 4%.

In terms of toll increases this year, the agency is leaning toward a split option: 6% for E-ZPass and 10% for the Mail at Home credit card.

Public comment meetings will take place in June that customers can attend virtually and in person before the MTA Board votes on fares the following month. The dates of the public meetings will be announced in the coming days.

Once approved, the new rates will be implemented by Labor Day, officials said at Monday’s meeting.
