Motorists Fined for Filming Serious Accident on A2 Highway

Jul 06, 2023 at 11:02 Update: 37 minutes ago

Twenty motorists will be fined 359 euros because they took photos and videos of a serious accident on the A2 behind the wheel.

A passenger car hit a truck from behind on the A2 near Echt on Wednesday evening, on the road in a northerly direction. The driver of the passenger car, a 27-year-old man from Heusden, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The A2 near Echt was closed for a long time for investigation.

Officers saw that photos and videos were being made en masse by motorists on the other lane and registered the license plates of motorists who did this.

They will soon receive a print at home. Using a smartphone while driving is not allowed.

‘We notice that people have a short fuse’

“We can register a lot with visible and invisible cameras,” explains a spokesperson for the police force management. “So also whether people behind the wheel are calling, texting or filming.”

The question of whether it is inappropriate to film a fatal accident, the police do not want to answer. “You can find all sorts of things about it. But that is not a criminal offense in principle – it is really about using the smartphone while driving.”

In a general sense, the spokesman notes that “the fuse in traffic seems to be getting shorter and shorter”. Road traffic is back to pre-corona levels. “And we notice in every respect that people have little patience behind the wheel. If this results in unsafe situations on the road, we stop people for that reason and issue a fine.”

Improvement: Earlier, the police reported that the man had died, but this turned out not to be the case. We have corrected this information in this article.
