Motörhead: “We were anti-establishment”

If the expression “awful, dirty and wicked” has any meaning, it is good for them. For forty years, Motörhead has spread the “good word” of the hottest and most aggressive rock’n’roll to millions of fans who swear by big guitar riffs and thunderous drums.

Motörhead is above all Lemmy, a charismatic leader who made no secret of his penchant for sex and drugs.

New posthumous album for Jimi Hendrix: “He came from another world”

But even he is not immortal, and in December 2015, right after Christmas, Lemmy went to join Jimi Hendrix in rockers heaven. The reissue of the album On Parole takes us back to the very beginnings of the group, in 1975. We talk about it with one of the rare survivors of the adventure, drummer Lucas Fox.

So, what is AC / DC’s new album worth?

We’re here to talk about the re-release of an album that didn’t even come out when it was recorded. What happened in 1975?

The record company at the time did not expect that. We imagined a universe with short and fast songs. It looked more like the Stooges.

When vintage music comes back to life

It sounded a lot like punk, which didn’t exist yet.

Yes, it evokes the Damned or the Sex Pistols two years in advance.

Were you aware of the innovative nature of your music?

It was exactly what we wanted to do. In the music as in the attitude. We were anti-establishment. Our look was also very different. The hippie days were over.

But yes, French rock exists …

However, “On Parole” is different from what we know about Motörhead. You mixed up a lot of different styles.

It’s normal. With Lemmy, our musical tastes matched. We liked the Who, the MC5 … we mixed it all up.

The day Sting shows off his Chartres Cathedral tattoo on his back …

The group gave off an anarchizing vibe.

Absolutely. We were coming out of the oil shock. In England, many young people were unemployed. The rock stars of the time were completely out of touch with their fans. They were millionaires who lived in mansions. We weren’t like that. Many musicians formed groups after listening to us.

With “Letter to you”, Bruce Springsteen is back!

Your first concerts were amazing, almost hypnotic.

The first shows were packed. It was packed with bikers and Hell’s Angels. They couldn’t believe hearing such music. It was a crazy atmosphere, everyone was in leather and cowboy boots.
Why did you leave the group?

? I was exhausted from the amphetamines. And I didn’t want to spend my life always playing the same songs on tour.

On Parole, by Motörhead. € 13 (CD), € 22 (vinyl).

Remi Bonnet

Along with this excellent On Parole, another Motörhead album, much more famous, is reissued. This is’Ace of Spades (1980), one of the band’s masterpieces, and pinnacle of hard-rock / heavy-metal style. This ultra-luxurious version is reserved for the most ultimate and wealthy fans. But there is content. The essential vinyl is of course there, as are the essential bonuses: two unpublished live albums captured in 1981 in Belfast and Orleans, a handful of as yet unknown songs, rarities, a DVD, a book of forty richly illustrated pages … In short, a highly radioactive dose of decibels. That’s a lot, but when you love …
