The recovery of the Italian motorcycle market stopped in September.
With its + 30% in sales, September had added to an equally positive summer quarter, a period of strong growth that began weakly in May after the lockdown period.
The resumption of Covid-19 infections, sensitive precisely in October, weighed on the decline in registrations of the October that have been 15,748, or -13.9%.
In October 2019 there was an increase of 10.7%, thanks to scooters (+ 15%), among which there were 2,000 Piaggio units purchased by the Italian Post Office.
This also explains the fact that last October there was an important decline due to the drop in sales scooter, passed from 11,908 a 9.260 unit (-22,3%): removing the Piaggio order, the differential would in fact be reduced to -5,4%.
In October the motorcycle still saw a small increase: 6.488 registrations for a +1,7%. But it is a small thing compared to + 25% in September.
I mopeds also saw an increase in registrations: 1.806 by a +17%.
The sum of fifty and larger models therefore rises to 17,554 units and the monthly loss is reduced to -11.5%.
N.B. The following rankings are compiled on the basis of the registration criteria in the lists operated by individual manufacturers, or importers, which do not use the same method in dividing or merging models with the same code but which are available in different versions.
For example, in the rankings you find the two BMW R1250GS divided between standard model and Adventure model, while Benelli TRK 502, Moto Guzzi V7, Ducati Multistrada 950, or Honda Africa Twin 1100, add up the sales of the two or more versions on sale.
The absolute Top 30
The monthly ranking sees the presence of in the first thirty positions eight motorcycle models (against six in September), with five high-wheeled scooters (three of these are 125 cc) before arriving at the Benelli TRK 502 which also in October is the best-selling bike.
Honda follows in tenth position overall Africa Twin 1100, like last month, and re-enters the BMW rankings with the two versions of the R1250GS: Adventure in 21st place and standard GS in 22nd. They close the ranking, from the 27th position onwards KTM Duke 125, Yamaha Ténéré 700 and Tracer 700, Benelli BN 125.

January-October: limited loss
The negative figure for October worsens the balance for the first nine months, but in a relative way given those who know pass from -7.15%, from January to September, al -7,7% than what goes from January to October.
In the former ten months of 2020 registrations were 199.961 against 216,625 in the same period of 2019 (-7.7%). Balance that worsens a little for motorcycle: 85.058 unity, that is -8,15%. Value that falls to -7,4% for the segment scooter which totaled 114,903 units.
Unchanged the registrations of the mopeds (+ 0.08% to be precise), with 16,779 fifty sold.
Electric models of all categories (which were 906 in October, equal to + 115%) still benefited from the incentives and in the calculation of the ten months they add up 8.644 units, equal to an increase of 127%.
“After a very positive summer and in contrast with other markets – commented Paolo Magri, president of ANCMA – we record a slowdown attributable to the second wave of Covid. To this factor are added others such as the more widespread use of teleworking, which has reduced the need to move especially in urban areas, but also economic uncertainty and, in a more marginal way, the climate and the expectation of new models. Despite the decline in the scooter market, mopeds and motorbikes are still holding in October, a sign that in this year – however very difficult – passion and demand for usable, spaced and sustainable mobility remain decisive factors of choice for a sector that, in the absence of aid and incentive measures, has proved to be vital and driving force for the country “.
