Mother dies, baby hospitalized after Long Island crash

NEW YORK — A mother died and a baby was hospitalized in critical condition after a crash Thursday morning on Long Island, Suffolk County officials said.

According to police, a vehicle was traveling northbound on County Road 101 and collided with the school minibus traveling eastbound on Express Drive South at 7:35 am in Yaphank.

The driver of the vehicle, a woman in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene, and her 1-year-old daughter, who was also in the vehicle, was transported to Long Island Community Hospital and then transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital where is in critical condition.

The 73-year-old bus driver and a bus passenger, a 61-year-old woman, are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

There were no children on the bus at the time of the accident.

Images from the scene showed the overturned bus.

It is currently unknown what caused the accident.
