NEW YORK — If New York City’s most popular baby names sound familiar, it’s because the new list is almost the same as the last: the names Emma and Liam remain the favorites of New Yorkers.
Since 2017 Emma has been the most popular name in the City for girls (288 were born in 2022) and since 2016 Liam has topped the list of names for boys (739 were given this name in 2022), according to certificate records. births announced on Tuesday by the city’s Health Department. In 2022, 99,459 babies were born in New York City, of those 50,595 were boys and 48,864 girls.
“What makes our city special are the New Yorkers, big and small, who call the five boroughs home,” said Health Commissioner Dr. Ashwin Vasan. “So let’s welcome Emma, Liam, Mia, Noah and all the other newborns to New York. Our city and our world are better for your presence in the new year and beyond.”
“We are here to support newborns and their families from their first days and we can’t wait to meet some of our new New Yorkers,” said Dr. Leslie Hayes, Deputy Commissioner for Family and Children’s Health at the Department of Health.
Of the top ten girls’ names of 2021, nine of them remained in the top ten list for 2022. Esther jumped to seventh place in girls’ names, displacing Sofia from the top ten. However, it is worth noting that if Sophia and Sofia were counted as one name, it would be number one.
In the case of baby boys, Alexander once again won a position, displacing Benjamin from tenth place. This name was last in the top ten list in 2020, when nine of the ten most popular boys’ names were also in the top ten the year before. Liam and Noah have secured the top two spots since 2020, while Ethan has held onto third place since 2021.
