Most Dutch people support ban on consumer fireworks NOW

A large majority of Dutch people want something to change in the way fireworks are handled in the Netherlands, according to research by Saturday. I&O Research.

85 percent of the Dutch no longer support the old way of lighting fireworks. Almost two thirds is for a general fireworks ban. In November that was still fifty percent.

Research by I&O Research shows that many people believe that fireworks lighting in the current way is harmful to the safety of people and animals. High costs and harmful consequences for the environment are also given as a reason to limit consumer fireworks.

44 percent of Dutch people still think fireworks are “a beautiful tradition”. Four years ago, 61 percent thought so.

Dutch people want fireworks shows as a replacement

Many Dutch people, more than seventy percent, want professional fireworks shows to be organized at central locations in municipalities. Two thirds of the people who still light fireworks at the turn of the year say that they would consider stopping if a fireworks show takes their place, says I&O Research.

Since Tuesday, a majority has been in the Lower House for a national ban on bang fireworks and flares. According to Minister Grapperhaus of Justice and Security, the advice of the Dutch Safety Board (OVV) from 2017 has been ‘an important guideline’.

Seventy percent of Dutch people support the OVV advice that states that fireworks and flares should be prohibited. Ornamental fireworks remain legal according to the advice.
