Mosque explodes in Afghanistan, many killed and injured (photos / video)

It is not yet clear what caused the blast, and no group has yet claimed responsibility.

A Taliban spokesman said today that many people had been killed or injured in an explosion at a mosque in Afghanistan’s northern province of Kunduz, the DPA reported.

At least 50 people were killed and 140 were injured in an explosion at a Shiite mosque in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, AFP reported.

“So far, 35 bodies have been brought to us and more than 50 injured,” a doctor from Kunduz’s main hospital told AFP on condition of anonymity.

Earlier, a representative of Doctors Without Borders, who also wished to remain anonymous, told AFP that more than 90 patients and more than 15 bodies had been brought to the NGO’s clinic in Kunduz.

Witnesses were quoted as saying by the Associated Press that they heard the explosion during Friday prayers at a Shiite mosque. It is not yet clear what caused the explosion.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the incident, but the DPA notes that members of Islamic State have been targeting the Shiite community in Afghanistan for years.
