Moroccan Sahara: a former Mauritanian minister calls on Algeria to end its radicalism

The recent American decision to recognize the Moroccan character of the Sahara has definitively buried separatist tendencies in the region. For the former minister and former president of the ruling party in Mauritania, Sidi Mohamed Ould Maham, Algeria must change by adapting to this new situation.

The former Minister of Culture, Communication, Crafts, Relations with Parliament and spokesperson for the Mauritanian government, Sidi Mohamed Ould Maham, also former president of the Union pour la République party, party of the current majority has just called on Mauritania to seize the new dynamic imparted by the recognition by the United States of the Moroccan character of the Sahara, to give its neutrality in this conflict a more positive dimension.

In a post on his Facebook page, Ould Maham, minister who resigned from the last government of former President Mohamed Ould Abdelaziz with whom he disagreed, believes that “radical solutions” no longer have their place and must be abandoned in view to settle definitively the Sahara conflict.

“We must be absolutely aware that radical solutions are unachievable, and must therefore reconsider our positions courageously and be as flexible as possible in the face of the new dynamic, by seriously looking at the practical solutions available, instead of leading the region in an unnecessary armed conflict ”. By “practical solutions”, Ould Maham obviously means the Moroccan proposal for autonomy under Moroccan sovereignty, which the proclamation of the White House has just supported.

The former boss of the UPR, a lawyer by profession, actually calls on Algeria to ask it to learn the lessons of the American decision and to be realistic by lifting the mortgage it imposed on the construction Maghreb through its support for the Polisario.

Thus, he calls for capitalizing on the new dynamic imparted by the Americans to the Sahara conflict, to move “towards greater rapprochement and greater realism in relations between the parties to the conflict, by realizing that this problem, which is not has lasted too long, ultimately opposes brothers, some of whom must bury their radicalism in order to devote themselves to development and stability in the region, and remove all the obstacles that hinder integration between countries and peoples of the region He writes.

As a reminder, Mauritania was severely impacted by the 3 weeks of the recent blockade of the passage to El Guerguerat by the Polisario militias. An episode during which Ould Maham was also noticed by lambasting, on his Facebook page, the threats that the leader of the Polisario had made against Mauritania which would pay a heavy price, according to Brahim Ghali, in the event of an outbreak hostilities in the Sahara.

In decrypted form, this post by the former senior Mauritanian politician clearly suggests that the carrots are cooked for the Algeria-Polisario tandem, and that in the event that the lines do not move on the Algerian side, Mauritania must show proof of “Courage” to take decisions that are in the direction of his interests. Starting with the withdrawal of recognition of the ghostly entity of the Polisario.
