More than 500 more cancer cases in Brabant last year, solar (banking) risky

Lying unprotected in the sun for too long or exposing the body to the sunbed are the most important risk factors, reports the Integraal Kankercentrum Nederland (IKNL).

Attention at Catharina Hospital
With lung cancer, the chance of survival is smallest. Omroep Brabant pays a lot of attention to World Cancer Day on Tuesday, in collaboration with the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven. Other hospitals in our country also consider this day.

Lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer and colon cancer are the most common cancers in Brabant after skin cancer. This is also the case nationally. People who have contracted lung cancer – for example as a result of smoking – must really be worried. Five years after diagnosis, only one in five patients with lung cancer is alive, according to IKNL.

“Older people at risk group”
This institute deals with the care of cancer patients and further calculated that there was also an increase in the number of diagnoses nationwide last year. In comparison with 2018, this is an increase by two thousand diagnoses to 118,000. According to IKNL, the causes are population growth and aging. People in old age have a greater risk of cancer.

Skin cancer is therefore the most common, but this disease has many forms that have a very different course of the disease. A number of these are usually easy to treat; metastases only occur in a small proportion of patients. The chance of this is greatest with melanomas.

Positive figures for colon cancer
Relatively speaking, the most positive figures can be reported in the field of colon cancer. The number of diagnoses in our country, and therefore also in our province, rose sharply after the introduction of the colon cancer screening in 2014.

In recent years, this investigation led to a decrease in the number of cases. This is because many intestinal polyps are traced and removed that could have caused colon cancer.

Men ‘promising’ for prostate cancer
The increase in the number of prostate cancer diagnoses was also large in Brabant last year: almost three hundred times more than in 2018 (1980 diagnoses in the year 2019 compared to 1700 in the year 2018). This is also the most common cancer in men. Nationally, this disease was diagnosed in 13,000 people and often at an early stage, so that worse could be prevented.

Incidentally, men may be treated unnecessarily, according to the INL, because they have a slow-growing tumor that causes little or no symptoms and which the patient will not die of.

Breast cancer in 2200 women
Breast cancer is the most common in women. In the past four years, Brabant has averaged 2200 people. Nationally, the number fluctuates around 15,000.
