More than 178 thousand children do not have any dose of the vaccine against COVID-19

(CRHoy.com).-A total of 178,231 children between 5 and 11 years old, They still do not have any doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to data from the Costa Rican Social Security Fund (CCSS).

This, despite the fact that on multiple occasions, the authorities have reminded that it is mandatory to inject minors with the doses of the vaccines that make up the basic scheme of immunization in the country, which includes the biological against SARS-CoV-2.

The pediatric vaccination schedule against the virus in the country is made up for two doses, applying the second, 21 days after the first.

Given the delay, Dr. Eduardo Cambronero, director of the Health Services Network, reminded parents that, “The vaccines used in the country are safe and effective, they reduce the risk of complications generated by the disease, hospitalization and the risk of death.”

At the cut of last April 25, the Integrated Vaccine System (SIVA), realizes that there are 602,925 children. 66% corresponds to the first dose and 48.7% to second injections.

Meanwhile, the scheme still needs to be completed, a total of 269,736 minors.

Vaccination in educational centers

The Bank is applying strategies to try to advance the immunization of this age group and reduce the number of minors awaiting vaccination.

The institution’s vaccinating teams are carrying out visits to educational centers to start, continue or complete schemes of the COVD-19 vaccine.

“The Ministry of Public Education (MEP) has always opened the doors for our teams to take vaccines to and from school, and in this way facilitate the vaccination of children, adolescents and teachers, this strategy began in March , and we are reinforcing it in these weeks”, indicated Dr. Cambronero.

In total, they have been applied 35,116 doses in an educational setting, of which 19,651 corresponds to doses placed in children; 10,483 doses to adolescents from 12 to 17 years old; and 4,982 doses to people over 18 years of age, who are officials who are captured within the educational infrastructure.

To continue with this process, the MEP issued a circular asking the directors of schools and colleges, facilitate their facilities for vaccinationn.

“We have urged parents to vaccinate their children and educational centers to provide facilities for this purpose,” said Ricardo Riveros, director of Management and Regional Development.

Dr. Olga Arguedas, director of the National Children’s Hospital (HNN), asked the parents or guardians of the minors to “protect your children; prevent your children from joining the 718 children, who we have already had hospitalized for COVID, of these 129 were in the Intensive Care Unit.
