More than 1,400 people immediately applied for an electric car premium today

In the first three hours since the counter opened, a premium was applied for 1,423 electric cars. This was reported by the Department of Mobility and Public Works.

Since the opening of the counter for the premium for electric cars on Tuesday at 1 p.m., a premium has been applied for for 1,423 cars. There was an immediate spike when the ticket office opened. In the meantime, the situation has stabilized, spokesperson Nick Arys reports. Most requests concern new cars. Lydia Peeters (Open VLD), the responsible Minister of Mobility, responds with satisfaction.

According to Arys, not all applications will lead to a premium, because a number of applications will not meet the conditions, have not been completed correctly or have been applied for twice. The premium is 5,000 euros for newly purchased cars and 3,000 euros for second-hand cars.

A total budget of 26 million euros has been allocated for the premium. This will enable premiums to be paid for 5,200 new cars.

Of the more than 1,400 applications, 1,346 are from citizens. 48 requests, good for a total of 64 vehicles, come from car sharing systems. Six non-profit organizations and foundations have registered another thirteen vehicles.

“The number of registrations shows that it was important that the e-counter could be opened as quickly as possible and that clarity was provided,” says Lydia Peeters. “It is also good that in addition to private individuals, many car sharing systems also applied. Car-sharing companies will play an important role in realizing the modal shift in the coming years.”

The premium can be applied for for zero-emission cars that are registered from January 1, 2024 and that were ordered at the earliest on September 25, 2023. Both new and second-hand cars are eligible for a premium. A second-hand vehicle must have been put into use for the first time at least three years and a maximum of eight years ago. The purchase price of the vehicle may not exceed 40,000 euros incl. VAT. The original catalog value of a second-hand vehicle may not exceed 60,000 euros incl. VAT.
