A fire broke out in the Jixiangyuan community in Urumqi city on the evening of November 24. Excessive closures are suspected to have prevented residents from fleeing and rescuing, causing casualties. Officials said 10 people were killed and 9 injured. The incident prompted people in many places in the country to mourn the dead and triggered a series of demonstrations. Many places launched “revolutions of white paper” and showed blank papers to approve silent protests. In Hong Kong this evening (28), in addition to dozens of people in Central who showed their solidarity, more than 100 people gathered in the evening outside the Democracy Wall at the Chinese University, holding white papers and slogan.
Some citizens placed flowers and candles at the scene, and some people chanted slogans in Mandarin, including “No nucleic acid, eat food”, “Don’t be a slave”, etc. Some people also sang “Do You Hear the People Sing?”, “March of the Volunteers” Wait.
There were security guards at the scene holding cameras to film those present and they came forward to ask who was responsible. Participants started leaving around 7:00pm and no police officers were present during the event.
