More incidents due to confused behavior during the corona period

Due to the loss of care during the corona period, the number of incidents rose sharply, mainly in May and June. There have never been as many reports as in June this year. The police had to turn out 11,048 times this month.

These figures concern the number of incidents where the police had to intervene. For example, if the person is a danger to himself or her environment or causes a lot of nuisance. According to the spokesperson for the police, these are often people with multiple problems. In addition to psychological problems, addiction problems, unemployment or debts can also play a role.

Little contact

Mariëlle van den Berg is a press officer for MIND, a platform for people with mental health problems. She recognizes this image. “We actively participated in corona work groups during this period, one of those groups focused on crisis care.”

“We also conducted research among our supporters and the GGZ panel that we questioned. We saw that people during corona suffered more from feelings of anxiety, had difficulty with certain forms of treatment, day activities, walk-in centers or visits and contact with family members or loved ones. People at risk of confused behavior need these kinds of opportunities. “

“Personal contact is very important for people who suffer from a complex disorder or display psychotic behavior,” says Van den Berg. “Certainly for people who avoid care, do not take their medicines or do not have a network they can fall back on. Because there were strict guidelines in the corona period, contact with some groups was really minimal. walk-in centers and daytime activities, but these facilities really opened up gradually “, says Van den Berg.

Langetermijngevolgen

According to MIND, the large increase in June has mainly to do with feelings that only became apparent later. “Not everyone is the same and the circumstances are not the same for everyone. We did see, however, that in June more and more feelings of stress emerged in people. The consequences for the long term started to become clear. For example, income or work that was lost. , no prospect of vacation or other concerns. “

According to the spokesperson, you can also expect that if something takes longer and longer, it will become much more difficult to keep it up. “During the first period you may think that you will get through it. But if it takes too long, then, especially for people who need care, a few months are very long.”

MIND therefore calls on their supporters to provide more customization for a possible new second wave. “We have also learned a lesson from the past period. We do not expect a total lockdown, but should local or regional rules be tightened, we will mainly look at the needs of the client. It must be tailor-made within the rules that apply to everyone. apply, but that does not automatically mean video calling. “

Not in the picture

Not only people who had problems before the corona period caused an increase in the number of incidents. “There are also many people who were previously not in the picture at all, but for whom the corona period has caused difficulties. Suicidal behavior, for example, also falls under confused behavior,” explains Van den Berg.

Confused behavior does not always have to cause incidents for which the police will turn.

MIND therefore calls on you to keep an eye on your neighbors or loved ones. “There are a lot of people with a condition who therefore show confused behavior in a certain way, also indoors. That is very worrisome. It is important, especially in the time of corona, if you notice that, for example, a neighbor or neighbor does not hear a sound for days on end. more makes or no longer goes out to see how someone is doing. If someone is not doing well, it can manifest itself in different ways. That is why it is so important to keep in touch. “

The spokesperson for the police indicates that the registration of the number of incidents with persons showing confused behavior has recently changed. But the effect of this on the figures and the growth in the number of incidents is not yet clear.
