NASA is planning a return to the Moon in the coming years under the Artemis program. The space agency said they learned some tough lessons about lunar dust during the Apollo era.
Dust on the Moon is responsible for clogging equipment, damaging spacesuits, causing radiators to overheat, and even interfering with the functioning of various instruments.
Technology is needed to mitigate this problem if NASA hopes to carry out long-term missions on the Moon. NASA explains, that’s where the Lunar Surface Innovation Initiative (LSII) will come into play.
This cross-agency effort is behind the development of technologies designed for lunar exploration, including new technologies that will help deal with abrasive lunar dust particles.
