JAKARTA, CEKLISSATU – A patient with monkey pox or Mpox in Indonesia died. The patient died while undergoing treatment at Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) for two weeks.
Internal medicine specialist at RSCM, Dr. Lie Khie Chen, said the patient died due to various complications caused by the comorbid conditions he experienced.
“There was one case at RSCM who died, but not because of Mpox, but because of other very complex causes,” said Dr Chen, in his press conference.
The patient, who was not identified, had problems with the digestive tract which caused intestinal obstruction. Apart from that, the patient also tested positive for Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection with a very low CD4 level.
Before being treated at RSCM, the patient had previously received treatment at another hospital. However, because his condition did not improve, the patient was referred to RSCM.
“So it had been going on for several weeks, maybe around three to four weeks before being referred to RSCM,” he said.
This disruption in intestinal flow causes the patient to undergo surgery. Even though the patient’s condition had improved after surgery, another illness made his condition worse again. The patient also experienced lung problems before he died.
“After two weeks of treatment, complications emerged in the lungs which were of course very serious. We tried to deal with it, but the condition was too severe and could not be helped,” he said.
Apart from digestive problems and worsening lung conditions, there are also numerous monkey pox lesions and pustules on the patient’s body. Some of these lesion points are even quite severe because the patient is forced to scratch them due to itching.
Even though there are cases of death in Mpox patients, this does not automatically increase the fatality rate of Mpox cases. This is caused by differences in the condition of each patient and the presence of different comorbidities.
