‘Modo pimiento’, the region’s campaign to promote the value of Murcian pepper

The new campaign to promote peppers in the Region of Murcia aims to promote their quality, enhance their consumption and promote their commercialization in the markets. The Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and the Environment presented it today, along with representatives of associations and companies in the sector.

The counselor Antonio Luengo stressed that “it is a sector with a production sustainable and innovative, that constantly incorporates the effort of technology transfer in aspects such as high precision irrigation, biological control or smart fertilization ”.

This translates, he said, into “a guarantee for consumers, from the point of view of nutritional value, as well as the supply of markets, since it occurs from March to October.”

Under the slogan ‘Pepper mode’, The campaign includes two promotional videos, a radio spot and a contest on the social network Instagram, with the hashtag #enmodopimiento, by a well-known influencer. The winners of the draw, which will take place on Wednesday June 30, They will receive batches of products with a beach kit, consisting of a t-shirt, a beach bag and a mobile phone hanger, as well as a batch of different varieties of peppers.

This initiative is part of the global promotion campaign of ‘Products from the Region of Murcia’ that the Ministry has been doing, in which it is about to value regional products and promote their consumption.

The cultivation of peppers in the Region of Murcia occupies 1,493 hectares, of which 1,189 are under greenhouse and the rest in the open air. In 2020, 111,876 tons of pepper were exported for a value of 155.3 million euros, the Murcian pepper representing the 13.2 percent of the total exports of this fruit at the national level.

Production is concentrated in region of Campo de Cartagena, there are two main types of varieties: California, which includes Tallante, Angus, Tamarín, Cadmanchú, Maestral, Yacir or Carson; and Lamuyo, to which Herminio, Almuden, Río Grande or Loreto belong. This year it is expected to increase production by 5 percent, exceeding the 165,061 tons in 2020.
