Miss America will be paramount in Doctor Strange 2 according to Sam Raimi

Little news in the MCU, Miss America remains very mysterious, just like her role in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Fortunately, Sam Raimi gives clues during an interview with Empire.

Phase 4 of the MCU will honor young heroines for a bit of renewal in the Marvel superhero roster. We had Kate Bishop in Hawkeye and Yelena Belova in Black Widow (and Hawkeye again). We got the trailer for Miss Marvel, an adaptation which risks being a hell of a rewrite of the comics given this first glimpse. And the other head that will make her debut in the vast universe of superheroes is Miss America in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. All in enigma, the character has been little revealed for the moment. Fortunately, director Sam Raimi came to bring some encouraging elements.

After the catastrophic events of Spider-Man : No Way Home, the multiverse took a big hit. Marvel’s Wizard (Benedict Cumberbatch) tries to pick up the pieces, seeking support from a reluctant Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen). It is with Ameica Chavez / Miss America (Xochitl Gomez) that Doctor Strange goes especially get help for his journey through dimensions. The superheroine with the ability to travel between universes by creating star portals, she is perfect for this role. And precisely, it is her knowledge in the field of interdimensional walks that will make her so useful according to the director of the film Sam Raimi.

A star is born

For Empirethe director of the cult trilogy Spider-Man and new Doctor Strange elaborated on what makes America Chavez interesting:

“Strange is still learning about the mutluniverse. And here is a character who can truly travel through it. He knows everything all the time, and now he has to learn from a probably smarter child.“

The relationship between the two heroes will therefore be the opposite of what we usually see in master-apprentice relationships. It’s the old mage who must learn from the young girl, which should give an interesting dynamic. If the character of America Chavez is as determined and driven as in the comics, giving her the opportunity to learn more than a wizard could create comic situations and close in spirit to the paper version. Indeed, his age does not prevent Chavez from being a nag whose fists are as violent as his remarks, affirming his freedom and his joie de vivre.

The first glimpse of Miss America’s Starry Portal

As a reminder, America Chavez is a very recent superheroine. Its first appearance dates from Vengeance #1 in 2011which did not prevent him from having his first series of comics, America, in 2017 by Gabby Rivera and Joe Quinones, and a second, America Chavez : Made in the USA in 2021 by Kalinda Vazquez and Carlos Gomez. Marvel is betting a lot on this character he has established as an LGBTQ icon since its appearance.

Here it is now in the MCU in a role that should be central in the dimensional crisis that runs through him, the same way Captain Marvel seemed to be the only bulwark against Thanos in Avengers : Endgame. That the future of the Marvel universe rests on the shoulders of a young heroine represents the colossal responsibility of Miss America. Let’s hope that the heroine will be better used than the character of Brie Larson, to find out we will have to wait for the release of Doctor Strange Multiverse of Madness le 4 mai 2022.
