Minsa: Shortage and high price of monkeypox vaccine are factors for not starting acquisition of doses

The adviser to the Ministerial Office of the Ministry of Health (Minsa)Eduardo Ortega, pointed out that the scarcity and high price of the vaccine against monkey pox These are the factors that influence the decision so that the State does not start the process of acquiring doses against the virus.

“The global demand far exceeds the supply is a single small laboratory and the other factor is the price. The price is much higher than any of the vaccines that we are currently using in the field of immunizations,” he told The Rotary of the Air of RPP News.

The doctor also asked not to delude the population with a massive vaccination against the monkey poxsince so far it is not recommended.

“PAHO is organizing a joint purchase through the revolving fund, but that joint purchase contemplates only 100,000 doses for all of Latin America and one person is vaccinated with two doses, that is, it would reach 50,000 people from Mexico to Chile, which would be a very small amount,” he explained.

In addition, Eduardo Ortega clarified that it is necessary to substantiate before the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) that “the benefit obtained in patients justifies the price to pay” for a vaccine against monkey pox.

Health can be understood as long as the risk is very high,” he said.

“When you argue the benefit of the intervention, you have to prove that indeed if the number of serious cases decreases, the number of hospitalizations, these are the so-called prioritized outcome results, the same thing happens with COVID-19, it is not new,” he added. .

“That’s called discrimination”

Elmer Huerta, Medical Advisor to RPP News and specialist in Public Health, considered that the Government does not acquire vaccines against monkey pox by discrimination against the group currently most affected by the disease.

“Since this is a group that is not defended by many people, the official has the luxury of going out (to say) on a national radio, despite the fact that we are the country in Latin America with the most cases per million, we are going to see if the vaccine works, the vaccine is also a bit expensive; that’s called discrimination,” he said.

For Dr. Elmer Huerta, the advisor to the SometimesEduardo Ortega, should be removed from office for being a bad spokesman and for discriminating against the population.

“Because on top of that you have to prove the effectiveness, that is, the official of the Ministry of Health he is telling the people at the CDC in the United States ‘listen you are fools, you are vaccinating with a vaccine that is not effective’. To me this is discrimination,” she insisted.
